Celebrity Autographs
- How Do I Start?
Becoming a celebrity autograph collector
is easy. However, in order to be a successful
collector, there are a few "tricks
of the trade" which might improve
your chances of getting a response.
Here are some things I've learned on
my own and thorough the help of other
collectors.
1. Always be polite. Think about it:
if you were a celebrity, would you be
likely to respond to someone who was
rude and obnoxious? Remember to say
"please" and always thank
them for their time.
2. Keep your letter short and to the
point. Celebrities are very busy people
and don't have the time to read three
pages of letter to find out what you
want. If you want an autograph, simplyt
ask for it.
3. Show an interest in their work.
It might be helpful to name a couple
of movies that you enjoyed their riles
in as proof you're interested in them,
and not just their signature.
4. Use a SASE! Although this is still
debated among collectors, I find you
get better responses. if the celebrity
is talking the time to sign an item
for you, the least you can do is make
it easy for them to return it. Since
many celebrities use 8x10 pictures,
make sure your return envelope can fit
a picture that size and have adequate
postage to cover it (use 2 first-class stamps).
5. Write neatly. A letter doesn't do
any good if the celebrity can't read
your handwriting. Some collectors type
their letter, but I believe in the old
handwritten letter, which is more personal.
Finally, have a little patience. I've
had requests returned as long as 2-1/2
years later! Don't keep writing more
letters and pestering someone if they
don't respond quickly. In fact, some
never respond at all.

Tips & Tricks
Right now is a great time to be a collector.
You have many resources available to
you: the best, being the Internet. many
collectors, are starting web pages about
the hobby. There you'll find their success
stories, which can only increase your
chances of getting autographs.
Addresses can be found everywhere:
pick the source that is most comfortable
for you to use, be it a book, the Internet,
etc. With a little bit of effort, and
a few bucks, celebrity autograph collecting
can be a rewarding hobby.
Here are a few things for you to remember!
1. Celebrities are always very busy
people. Don't be surprised if it takes
a few weeks to months to get a response.
And with the volume of fan mail they
receive everyday, it could take them
forever to get back to you.
2. Always include a self-addressed
stamped envelope (SASE) when you send
to a celebrity requesting his/her autograph.
It is a common courtesy, and sometimes
it's the only way a cel3brity will write
back.
3. Always keep letters short and polite.
You will also want to do a little research
about the person you're sending to and
say something in the letter like "I
really loved you in the move ..."
etc., Also, unless you have perfect
handwriting, you should type the letter,
then hand-sign it at the bottom. Address
envelope by hand also, more likely to
get opened.
4. Never request more than 2 autographs.
if you request more, clebs might think
that you are a dealer looking to profit
from their signature. Plus it's just
greedy. If you want more signatures
from a celebrity, wait and see if you
get a response back then send out another
request or 2.
5. Always check your spelling in the
letter, and of the celebrity's name.
There's nothing more embarrassing than
writing to a celebrity for an autograph
and getting his or her name wrong.
6. Never send flowers, candy, or any
other gifts to celebrities. This could
be considered stalking.
7. Keep track of the autograph requests
you send out. Especially if you send
out a bunch at a time. Keep a file on
your computer with the person's name
and date sent and received a response
from, how many days it took, and whether
the response was successful or not.
8. Have patience. even if you don't
get a response for months, it's all
worth it when you open your mailbox
and find an autographed picture from
your favorite celebrity.
